Empowering Young People for a Clean Energy Future: 350 Ghana’s Renewable Energy for Schools Project in Axim

From 27th to 30th November 2025, 350 Ghana Reducing Our Carbon (350 G-ROC) successfully implemented the Renewable Energy for Schools (RE for Schools) Project in Axim, in Ghana’s Western Region. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Axim Technical Institute and Axim Girls Senior High School, under the theme “100% Renewable Energy for Schools.”

The project aimed to equip students with practical renewable energy skills, inspire climate-conscious behavior, and strengthen awareness of clean energy solutions within schools and surrounding communities.

Engaging Schools and Building Climate Leadership

The program officially commenced with engagement sessions involving school leadership, teachers, and traditional authorities to align expectations and prepare for activities. Over the course of the project, about 500 students participated, with girls making up approximately 75% of the total participants—highlighting the project’s strong focus on gender inclusion.

Students took part in interactive learning sessions that combined creativity and technical skills. Through poetry, drama, and open discussions, participants explored renewable energy solutions, climate change impacts, and emerging opportunities in green jobs.

Breakout sessions provided hands-on training in assembling simple solar lamps using recycled plastic waste and locally available materials. Selected student champions from both schools were trained to continue peer-to-peer learning beyond the project period, ensuring sustainability and long-term impact.

Youth as Key Climate Decision-Makers

Speaking to students during the program, Charles Wundengba, Head of Communications at 350 Ghana, emphasized the central role young people play in the climate fight.

“Students are key decision-makers when it comes to energy use in their homes and schools. The choices you make today will shape the future of Ghana’s energy system,” he noted.

Renewable Energy Walk and Community Outreach

On the second day, students led a Renewable Energy Walk through the Axim community, drawing attention to clean energy and climate action. The walk served as a powerful awareness tool, engaging residents and encouraging conversations around renewable energy adoption.

Following the walk, students—supported by the 350 Ghana team—installed a solar streetlight on the school campus, improving safety and visibility during evening hours. The team also extended outreach to a nearby fishing community, engaging fisherfolk on renewable energy solutions and their benefits.

Strong Support from School Leadership

The Principal of Axim Technical Institute, Safiatu Seidu, expressed deep appreciation for the initiative and called for its continuation.

“This kind of practical renewable energy education is very important for our students. We would welcome more of such programs in our school,” she stated.

A Step Toward a Clean Energy Future

The RE for Schools Axim Project successfully strengthened climate awareness, built practical renewable energy skills, and empowered students to become clean energy advocates within their schools and communities. The installation of solar infrastructure, strong student participation, and collaboration with school authorities underscore the growing role of education in Ghana’s clean energy transition.

Through initiatives like this, 350 Ghana continues to invest in youth leadership, community engagement, and sustainable energy solutions, helping to build a future powered by clean, inclusive, and renewable energy.
